Reviving the lost spaces under urban highways and bridges: an empirical study

Purpose The fast development of urban movement infrastructures has created neglected urban places in cities. This study aims to provide users’ preferences for designing lost spaces that are a by-product of elevated urban highways (UHs) and bridges to develop a conceptual model for better environmental design. One of the most interesting fields in which to study the interaction between senses is that of the urban space experience. If the semiotic approach questioned especially the meaning configurations deriving from the visual organisation of space and from the relationship between designed space and lived space (Hammad 2003, 2013; Marrone, Pezzini 2006 and 2008) other approaches suggested concepts like ‘soundscape’ (Schafer 1977) or ‘smellscape’ (McLean 2014). The destabilization of the concept of home as a nest, and the consequent sense of belonging to it, find in the texts of migrant writers a new centrality, telling about others perspectives and imaginary with respect to the dominant one. Often forced to confine themselves in enclaves that exclude them from the territory of the natives, immigrants are driven to transform these spaces into exclusive places of their supportive diversity.
